NEWS: Les Mutrie passes away

A very sad story has emerged from the football club today, with news that legendary striker Les Mutrie has died at the age of 66. The forward has been battling with cancer over a long period of time, but a brief statement on Hull City's official website confirmed the fans favourite has now lost his fight with the disease.

RIP "Sir Les"

Mutrie shot to prominence with Hull City - and the fans - after starring for non-league Blyth Spartans in an epic FA Cup tie that, saw the striker hugely impress the Tigers, effectively motivating the club to eventually sign the forward in back in 1980. It proved to be a shrewd signing.

The transfer culminated in Les Mutrie quickly becoming a firm favourite on the terraces at Boothferry Park, in a career that spawned 132 appearances for Hull City, scoring 50 goals during his time in East Yorkshire. Included in that run, Mutrie to this day, still holds the record at the club for scoring in 9 consecutive matches.

From everybody connected with City Independent, we'd like to extend our condolences to Les Mutrie's family and friends at this sad time.
