SUMMARY: Preston North End 1-2 Hull City

Hull City turned in a very hard working performance at Deepdale to down Preston North End - who are building their Championship status by being tough to beat on home turf - but the Tigers took all the spoils in this match with a brace of headers from Jackson Irvine.

Irvine on the double!

The game adopted an even tone, with neither side fashioning much of a goalscoring chance in the opening exchanges. Yet, as the half wore on, Hull City were encouraged by the state of play and a brilliant combination down the left saw Irvine flash in a header on 28 minutes from Kingsley's precise cross. That goal gave the visitors confidence, who then proceeded to assume control of the game. Looking increasingly dangerous - especially on the counter - the only surprise was City not doubling their lead at the break.

Moments into the second half - and out of the blue - Browne's long range effort found the top corner to turn the game completely on it's head and put the hosts level. City wobbled for a few minutes, but did eventually regain composure. Shortly after, Irvine was tripped in the box when clean through, but the penalty claim was unbelievably waved away. Kane and Grosicki both fired good chances wide, but on 80 minutes Irvine headed in an effort from a corner to give the Tigers a deserved lead - and ultimately three more points.
